Beyond Physicality
Overview
Overview
'Beyond Physicality' was equal parts artistic revelation and technological innovation.
Featuring hand-drawn animation at human scale, generative sculpture, haptic scoring and custom smells, the show evoked a wide range of reactions. Some laughed, some stared in awe, others sat and contemplated — a few even cried.
In 'DO NOT TOUCH THE ART', Monster Mike's character JEFF invited viewers on a whimsical and strangely poignant journey through space and time, concluding with the near-drowning of JEFF in a larger-than-life chaotic soup, representative of the artist's own struggles with epilepsy.
In Darien Britto's 'Portal', viewers could choose from a variety of martianesque, fairytale landscapes to step through, where they were greeted by one of Philippe Caya's gravity-defying 'Zupermat' sculptures, and one of Aaron Penne and Boreta's 'Rituals' suspended in space.

The power of spatial art is to engage with viewers in a more immediate and visceral way than ever before. With this in mind, it's important to recognize and understand where spatial art (in concert with haptics) differs from other mediums
First and foremost, the use of space is essential. To fully honor spatial art, one must 'design' an experience to anticipate and cooperate with a viewer's circulation patterns in whatever architecture houses the art.
Second, integrating haptics allowed for more immediate and potent artistic immersion and connection. By using targeted haptic articulations, we were able to quickly shift a viewer's brain state to be more 'receptive' to the art.
Finally, spatial art should push beyond what any other medium offers. That is, a good spatial piece should defy physics, conventionality, and reality whenever possible.
